Cartoon sound editing evaluation

How do you think your recoding matched the cartoon?

I feel that my recording matched the cartoon well. I watched the cartoon and tried to recreate the sounds to my best ability or tried to resource the best matches from online sources. The sounds I used fitted and matched the visuals.

Do they complement each other?

The sounds and the visuals, in my opinion, complement the cartoon well. The sounds match the visuals and the help reinforce the cartoons narrative. The cartoon makes sense and also communicates well with an audience

What did you record and how?

I recorded two sounds, a cough and a slap. The reason I recorded these sounds is because I couldn’t find a suitable version of the sound online. I recorded these sounds by using a Dictaphone. I produced these sounds by coughing to the microphone and clapping my hand together.

What did you get online and why?

I got the sounds of the metal crashing and glass smashing online. The reason I got these sounds is because I couldn’t produce these sounds one my own. I also downloaded the sounds of the barking as I couldn’t record this in college.

Are you happy with overall result?

I am personal happy with the overall result, even thought some think that the music does not fit the cartoon. As I was asked to redub this cartoon with new sounds I saw this as a good opportunity to update and modernize the piece. To do this I use ‘Scary monsters and nice sprites’ by Skrillex. I am happy with the overall sound and look of the cartoon. I feel that the cartoon is entertaining to watch and shows my sound editing well

What would you do differently?

If I was to do this project again I would like to use a different cartoon. As Tom and Jerry was produced in the 1940’s the production of the sounds and visuals was a very different process that we used to redub the cartoon. Using a digital process to redub a hand-made piece made the mix of quality and frame rate difference made the editing hard then usual dubbing.

Task 1

The mouse comes to dinner 4:21 - 6:21

Disconnected - Brief

for the first scene for the music video, I will be filming in a house or flat which with jazz sat looking out of a window. I will use a long shot for this scene as to show her whole body and also show the more of the area she is in. the shot will be a high angle and will only use the light coming thought the window. the colours in this scene will be slightly muted and have a high contrast ratio. I will use a tripod and DSLR camera for this scene as it will only require a simple set up.

For the second scene, I will be filming at night on a bridge which will have jazz walking along and looking into the water below. I will be using a tripod and DSLR like before but I will need to use an additional lighting source to keep jazz well lit, I will also want a car lights and lights from buildings in the background and reflecting on the water below. For this scene there will also be a shot which there is more water then bridge and will need a something to attach the camera to. the shot would be a mid shot and be a median angle to create a flat horizon. the colours will be saturated in this scene and the contrast ratio high

For the third scene, I will be filming in a park in the daytime. I would like to have jazz playing the guitar sat on a bench with the shots of the grass and trees in the background. the colours in this scene will be light and but have a tint and the contrast ratio will be low, I will use a tripod and DSLR camera again but I will want a track a dolly to have the ability to have a pull back with jazz stood at the left side of the frame. the shot will be a long shot and the angle high and low for a variety of shots.

I will be mixing the shot in editing to create a montage style video of all the different scenes and sections involved.

Brief

The music video will consist of three main scenes. An outside scene, an inside scene and a nighttime scene. the will use these scene and have one for colour, one for light and one for depth. this will give the music video diversity of style and shots.

I will use the inside scene for light as I can control the light easier, I will uyse the outside scene for colour use plants and other naturally occuring colours and I will use the nighttime scene for depth and the lights in the background will be out of focus and create a unique background

Analysing our footage

Inside Noisy Location
We chose to film in a place we had no control over, this would be cause there to be noise and other inference. After we captured and reviewed our footage we found that you could here the people in the background quite loudly and the location where we filmed had a high ceiling which caused echos.

Outside location
The location we picked to film outside was in quite a busy area, it was also a windy day. When watching the footage we found that you could here people in the background and also the wind was causing a lot of inference along with the trees.

Inside Quite Location
Our sound recording from this location is good but there are a few things that we could improve on. the macs in the classroom were left on a can be heard running in the background, you can also here mobile phone inference on the track.

Filming

Today as my group were not here I joined another group and filmed with them instead. We filmed outside near the aeroplane, we filmed in the the computer around and also inside the classroom.

Filming schedule & equipment list

For this music video I have two Weeks for the production of this music video. As the music video is quite simple I don't need much time for production. We have a night time scene, a daytime scene inside a house and also have outside shot in the daytime. The filming schedule we be quite short which means that editing can be given more time.

Day one: Nighttime scene
As the night time scene will be the most time consuming and difficult though to film we do this first as that can give an opportunity to reshoot if needed

3:30 pm - crew meet and set up equipment at said location and make sure everything is I'm place to film

4:00 pm - jazz arrives and test shots were taken to get exposure, lighting, composition and while balance correct for shotting.

4:30 pm to 7:00 pm - filming will commence and all shots discussed will her filmed in this time and anything else that may also look nice be and good addition to the music video

Day two: footage review to decided if any shots need to be filmed again

Day three: Daytime outside scene
As the daytime scene will also be quite time consuming this be filmed earlier.

10:00 am - cast and crew will arrive and set up equipment and then also take test shots

10:30 am to 12:30 am - filming will commence and all discussed shots will be filmed and anything that would be a nice addition to the music video

Day four: review footage.

Day five: daytime outside scene
This should be the easiest scene to film and will not take a lot of time.

12:00 pm - cast and crew meet and set up equipment and take test shots

12:30 pm to 2:00 pm will discussed shots will be filmed anything seen to be a good addition to the music video

Day six: footage review and the start of editing

The equipment I will need to this video is a camera, a tripod and battery powered lighting so we can film outside outside.

Preparing to shoot on location

it is important to plan your film to know what you need to film and recorded and how you can do it easily, if you don’t plan it then it may take you a lot longer to film and you not have the shots that you need a discussed earlier.

If were not to plan your filming the shots that you need may not be captured, the quality what was filmed might not be useable also. Sound recording needs to be planned as it may take the most time and if you not think about where you are recording then they be to much sound interference
